Description of Experience:
Mozambique has a population of 10 million children. There are no formally trained pediatric surgeons in the country, although one adult surgeon has been identified as the “pediatric surgeon designee” for Hospital Central in Maputo. The goal is to initiate a formal on-site training program in pediatric surgery, sending an experienced pediatric surgeon from the U.S. to Maputo every couple of months to train the local surgeon and his colleagues in pediatric surgical principles and procedures. In addition, the local surgeon is committed to training future surgeons in pediatric care, highlighting the priority to maximize the sustainability of the program in Mozambique. Resources and pediatric subspecialists are limited, and few neonatal proceedures are performed. The majority of cases are for anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung’s disease. Experience in urologic procedures is also helpful. Pediatric urologists would also be welcome.
