Entries in this section describe work that is planned in the future, so that interested pediatric surgeons can join trips that are already organized. Entries in this section might also describe work that is needed by pediatric surgeons in low- and middle-income countries, so that potential volunteers can connect with these surgeons to meet their needs.
Surgical help will be needed in the form of training of surgeons. We have got reasonably good expertise in doing most of the open procedures and various laparoscopic procedures. We wish to learn advanced pediatric laparoscopy. We have got basic instruments for open and laparoscopic surgeries.
Mozambique has a population of 10 million children. There are no formally trained pediatric surgeons in the country, although one adult surgeon has been identified as the “pediatric surgeon designee” for Hospital Central in Maputo. The goal is to initiate a formal on-site training program in pediatric surgery, sending an experienced pediatric surgeon from the U.S. to Maputo every couple of months to train the local surgeon and his colleagues in pediatric surgical principles and procedures. In addition, the local surgeon is committed to training future surgeons in pediatric care, highlighting the priority to maximize the sustainability of the program in Mozambique. Resources and pediatric subspecialists are limited, and few neonatal proceedures are performed. The majority of cases are for anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung’s disease. Experience in urologic procedures is also helpful. Pediatric urologists would also be welcome.

I have been working and arranging for CME surgical visits in Solomon Islands for the past 3 years. The medical services need upgrading. There is no CT scanner but the surgeons are skilled, dedicated and diligent. They wish to establish regular CME and professional exchanges with US doctors. There is much work to be done in Solomon Islands. The surgeons are skilled and dedicated, infrastructure at NRH is satisfactory. There is no surgical care available in the provincial hospitals. Over 50% of the population is pediatric. I have repaired patent urachus, branchial cleft cyst, thyroglossal duct cyst, pediatric hernias and many foreign body extractions. There are imperforate anus and tracheal-esophageal atresias as well.
